This is the annual rate you expect the business to grow over the next 7–10 years — it drives both the Graham formula and the Forward P/E method.
Why the default is conservative. Intrinsic sets it to the lowest of three numbers: the company's actual 5-year revenue CAGR, a forward analyst estimate (when available), and a hard 4% ceiling. Most companies don't sustain today's growth rate forever — competition, market saturation, and reversion to the mean all pull growth back toward the economy's long-run average. Anchoring low means you're less likely to overpay for a growth story that doesn't materialize.
How to think about moving it. Push it higher only if you have a specific, durable reason to believe this business can keep compounding faster than most — a structural moat, not just a good last few years.
